Democratic Dialogue for Progressive Taxation to Tackle Inequality project seeks to strengthen democratic dialogue and advocacy for progressive taxation and financial integrity to reduce inequality and improve domestic resource mobilization. Many African countries face a major funding gap for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while tax collection remains low and public debt continues to rise. At the same time, inequality is extremely high, seven of the ten most unequal countries in the world are in Africa. Such inequality undermines poverty reduction, economic growth, and democratic governance while reinforcing gender and social disparities. The project aims to address these challenges by strengthening the social contract between citizens and governments and promoting inclusive discussions on progressive taxation. This will be done through investigative journalism, evidence-based advocacy, and citizen mobilization. The project will push for tax reforms that ensure wealthier individuals contribute fairly to public revenues. It will also advocate for policies that increase transparency and accountability in public finance.

Overall Project Goal: The overall goal is to promote progressive tax policies that help governments mobilize domestic resources and fund inclusive and gender-responsive public services.

Project Duration: 3 Years (January 2026 to December 2028)
