USAID Mission Director’s Visit Trus2Peace Athletic Activities at Gbiniyiri

On April 16, 2024, Norsaac had the privilege of welcoming Kimberly Rosen, the Mission Director of USAID, to the vibrant Gbiniyiri community in the Savannah Region of Ghana. This visit marked a significant moment in the ongoing efforts to promote peace and resilience in Northern Ghana through the Trust2Peace Activity, generously supported by USAID.

Gbiniyiri, nestled in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, is a multicultural community that embodies diversity and unity. As a beneficiary of the Trust2Peace Activity, the community has been actively engaged in initiatives aimed at building social and communal resilience against the threat of violent extremism.

The day’s events unfolded with a spirit of collaboration and community spirit as community members, alongside the Mission Director, participated in various activities designed to foster social cohesion and resilience. Led by Mohammed Awal Alhassan, Executive Director of Norsaac, the day showcased the power of collective action in promoting peace and unity.

A highlight of the day was a spirited football match, bringing together teams representing different ethnic groups within the community. This inclusive approach, which also featured women’s penalty shootouts and refereeing, underscored the role of sport as a unifying force in bridging divides and fostering mutual respect.

The festivities continued with a symbolic “tug of peace” and a cultural showcase, where traditional songs and dances celebrated the values of peace and togetherness. The Mission Director, alongside other dignitaries, enthusiastically joined in, further strengthening bonds across cultural lines.

In her closing remarks, the Mission Director emphasized the importance of sustaining such initiatives and encouraged ongoing community engagement to promote peace and resolve disputes. She commended the youth for their proactive involvement and highlighted the significance of collaboration in building resilient communities.

The Trust2Peace activity in Gbiniyiri exemplifies the positive impact of collaborative efforts between Norsaac and its partners, including the University of Maryland, Washington State University, and WANEP Ghana. By fostering trust, unity, and mutual understanding, initiatives like these contribute to the realization of Sustainable Development Goal 16, paving the way for a brighter and more peaceful future for all.

Through initiatives like Trust2Peace, Norsaac continues to lead the way in building resilient communities and promoting peace and unity in Northern Ghana.
